You know that's another issue. I can't seem to find the sticker. Is there any way to get that key from an installed Windows before I reinstall it?– DenNov 3, 2012 at 22:30

Absolutely, use Produkey. Simple, small and portable to boot!– KaranNov 3, 2012 at 22:36

The only possible issue is, if the previous install was from the factory, it was most likely activated using the OEM SLP key, whereas the COA key is different. Are you sure the laptop doesn't have a factory reset/restore feature? If it does I would recommend you use that instead. Otherwise if you have any problems activating with the retrieved key (most likely you won't), you might need to activate over the phone by calling MS (just explain the situation and they shouldn't cause any problems at all).– KaranNov 3, 2012 at 22:40

If it is a XP disc from Dell it does contain the key, and will not ask for one during install.– MoabNov 4, 2012 at 1:19

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. windows-7), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
